FAMOUS CAMUS DON'T SMOKE NO MORE!
In February 2011, Geoff Du Toit, Bila Muuji Smoking Cessation Project asked Gracie Productions to produce a DVD to be used by their Health Workers to educate children about the harmful effects of smoking. The result was the FAMOUS CAMUS Don't Smoke DVD and the song, Don't Take Up the Smoke.Recent media has highlighted smoking rates in Indigenous communities as a major health concern and this partnership between Gracie Productions and Bila Muuji Smoking Cessation Project is a creative and engaging way to convey the message about the harmful effects of smoking.
Chris Burke has performed Famous Camus as part of the Strong, Smart and Deadly Show presented in schools and communities. She created the Famous Camus character profile and storyline using a Sunny Puppet camel which is distributed through Gracie Productions' Puppet Shop.
Chris adapted the 'live' script, performed the puppet and directed and produced the DVD. Michael Bourke from grapemultimedia was contracted to film and edit the DVD. Peter Winkler created the music for the song to accompany the lyrics written by Geoff Du Toit and Chris Burke.
Feedback to date shows that children are loving Camus and his little offsider - The Eyes - and the catchy reggae rap song Don't Take Up the Smoke is fast becoming a major hit.
